Chapter 66
After busting out of the hospital. Emily floored it all the way home.feeling on top of the world now that she was free from anyone's grip. She could finally be herself. something she'd always dreamed of. Slowly, it hit her that she didn't need to obsess over Patrick anymore.
The cozy moments behind the safety door brought back a flood of memories for Emily. Those raindrop-like kisses felt a bit different this time. She could taste a hint of love in them. Thinking about it, she pinched her thigh hard.trying to push thoughts of Patrick away. She thought. Emily.can you really forget about Patrick?
As the twilight faded. Emily and Melissa sped home, looking worn out.
Back home. Melissa and Emily couldn't wait to drop everything and flop onto the couch. not moving an inch. After spending half the day at the hospital, they were wiped out. Melissa suggested. "How about we go out and celebrate? It's rare for you to have a day off. What do you think.Emily?" But when she turned to Emily, she saw she had already dozed off.
Melissa grabbed a blanket from the bedroom and gently covered Emily. Then she headed to the fridge. looking around. There wasn't much left. so a biggrocery run was in order soon. Melissa wrote down a list. Although it was her first time taking care of a pregnant woman, weren't all parents once inexperienced before they became skilled? She thought to herself. 'Let's raise a healthy, chubby girl.'
Thinking about this made Melissa smile. Her plan was filled with thoughts of Emily and the baby. She felt a strange sense of accomplishment. as if she would be the one to manage her future goddaughter's upbringing.Then. she took out all the ingredients, planning to prepare a lavish dinner
to treat Emily.
Melissa quickly cracked the eggs into a bowl, whisked them, cleaned the shrimp. and prepped the ingredients. Now. she just had to wait for Emily to wake up so they could enjoy a simple, cozy dinner together.
Emily was jolted awake by the phone ringing. Ironically, the more tired she was, the faster she fell asleep and the deeper she slept. without even dreaming. Even though she'd only napped for half an hour, Emily's fatigue and panic vanished in an instant. The phone on the bedside kept flashing. It was a call from Patrick's new secretary. Emily hesitated for three seconds but ultimately didn't answer.
Melissa poked her head out and said, "Awake? Come eat! I made it!"
When Emily walked out and looked closely, she saw the table was already filled to the brim with the dishes that Melissa had prepared. Melissa had meticulously selected each piece of kitchenware, enhancing the meal's visual appeal and making it even more appetizing. Emily started to realize that maybe the world didn't need so much romantic love. Having a good friend was enough. Watching Emily dig into the pie, Melissa felt she could finally relax a bit, knowing how much Emily loved Patrick.
It was already hard enough to finish the noodles that Melissa kept piling on her plate, and now she was handed a big bowl of fruit. Emily's face scrunched up in protest.
"Melissa.I really can't eat anymore. Babies don't grow up in a day,and pregnant women can't give birth in a day either. No matter how anxious you are. can you please consider the well-being of the mother?"
"Don't say such inauspicious things! If you can't eat, just set it aside. You can eat it later when you're hungry." Melissa cleaned up the kitchen and
then sat cross-legged beside Emily, leaning her head on her shoulder.
"Tired?" Emily patted Melissa's hand.
"Im not as capable as you. I really can't imagine how you've managed to deal with Patrick for so many years, handling his work and taking care of his life. How have you endured it all?"
"Could it be that love really makes a person stronger?" Melissa said.hugging Emily's arm.
"Alright, who's the pregnant one here. you or me? Why are you suddenly getting all emotional? That's not okay."
"Come on, let's go out for a walk to digest. Didn't you say you wanted to buy a lot of things?"
Emily didn't want to discuss the past. She had finally managed to forget that man for four hours. She wished for just a little more tíme, until the memories faded enough that they wouldn't stir any feelings in her heart. That would be true forgetting.
The night breeze was getting a bit chilly, but Emily loved it. She finally had a place of her own. After working so hard for so long, having this moment feIt totally worth it. Melissa held Emily's hand as they strolled through the park. watching night joggers and cyclists. Even at night, this city was buzzing with life.
As they walked. Melissa said. "Hey, there's a big shopping mall up ahead.Since we're here, why not check it out?" Emily had been in Pearl Peak City for years, but it seemed like she never really lived for herself. Every day was about Patrick, his office, and his bed. It was crazy. Emily responded,"Sure,Melissa!"
Pointing to the bright moon. Emily said. "Melissa, look. is it a supermoon this year?" She pulled out her phone and snapped a picture.
The newly opened supermarket was indeed impressive, grand and luxurious. The two of them wandered a bit before diving straight into the bookstore.
Melissa stood stubbornly in the corner of the cooking guide section.unwilling to budge. Meanwhile. Emily transformed into a novice mother.browsing through various parenting guides. Before they knew it, both of them were feeling sore and achy from standing.
"No, no! I'll just buy these books online and have them delivered to my home later. I don't have the energy to carry them back today. Come on,beautiful pregnant lady. I'll accompany you to the restroom." Melissa shook her head at Emily, who was ready to pay for the books. She was worn out.
