Chapter 12
After Alexander Valdemar fell into a coma, Patriarch Valdemar became the stabilizing force of Valdemar Holdings.
He shuttled daily between the sanatorium and the corporate office, juggling concerns for his grandson's condition with managing the undercurrents within the empire.
When Sophia Laurent knocked lightly on the hospital door, the patriarch was reviewing documents.
"Enter."
He looked up, surprise flickering in his eyes at her presence.
"Grandfather."
Sophia took a steadying breath before using the unfamiliar address.
The patriarch set down his fountain pen, his gaze piercing. "What brings you here?"
Though his tone remained even, the authority radiating from him made most people avert their eyes.
Sophia met his stare with clear, unwavering resolve.
"I need a favor. Margaret Delaney, who raised me, has been comatose since her fall two years ago. Could Dr. George Whitmore examine her?"
The patriarch studied her in silence.
"I'll handle transportation personally. The medical expenses are my responsibility."
Her voice carried neither subservience nor arrogance.
After a measured pause, he nodded. "Granted. But our personnel will supervise throughout."
"Really?"
Sophia hadn't expected the notoriously decisive patriarch to agree so readily.
Genuine gratitude shone in her eyes. "Thank you, Grandfather!"
"Dismissed." He waved a hand.
As Sophia exited, the steward ventured, "With the hospital on high alert, why would you—"
"If she's asking, this person matters deeply to her."
The patriarch's expression hardened.
"Controlled vulnerabilities make for better leverage."
Understanding dawned on the steward.
Pre-marriage investigations had shown Sophia Laurent warranted closer scrutiny than Emily Lowell.
This woman was far more than she appeared.
Beyond metaphysical considerations, the Valdemars currently needed a "Mrs. Valdemar" to steady the ship.
"Your assessment?" the patriarch suddenly inquired.
The steward considered. "Exceptional poise, elite education. Only her family background—"
The patriarch gave a slight nod and retrieved his pen.
When Sophia approached the sanatorium director, the man received her with deference.
After a confirming phone call, an ambulance stood ready within minutes.
