Chapter 379
Alexander Valdemar was walking alongside Gavin Winslow when his phone suddenly vibrated.
He pulled it out, and the name flashing on the screen instantly softened the stern lines of his brow.
"Mr. Valdemar, I'm sorry..." Sophia Laurent's hesitant voice came through. "I might have to break my promise."
With her pregnancy now public, the divorce could no longer stay hidden.
She couldn't let Alexander bear the stigma of being a cuckold.
Alexander paused mid-step, his voice gentle. "Don't worry. I'm coming over."
Ethan Winston frowned beside him.
Since when had Sophia become so familiar with Alexander?
"That's unnecessary!" Sophia quickly refused. "I can handle this myself."
She bit her lower lip. "It's just... the divorce can't be kept secret anymore..."
Before she could finish, footsteps sounded at the door.
Sophia looked up to see Alexander's tall frame already standing before her.
The man wore an impeccably tailored black suit, his slender fingers still holding the phone to his ear.
Their eyes met, and Sophia's breath caught.
She hadn't expected his "coming over" to mean literally this second.
"Sophia." Ethan's voice broke the silence. "We need to talk."
Sophia averted her gaze, her tone cold. "There's nothing to discuss."
"What about the child?" Ethan took a deep breath. "Isn't that worth talking about?"
Sophia's eyes darkened. "No."
"This child belongs only to me. It has nothing to do with you."
She intended to draw a clear line.
But then Ethan's eyes lit up. "How could it not involve me?"
From her words, he became certain something had indeed happened after that Met Gala Afterparty.
He'd just been too drunk to remember.
The thought made the corners of his mouth lift uncontrollably. "Sophia, the child is mine, isn't it?"
"I promise to treat you both well. I'll never hurt you again."
Sophia's expression turned even colder at his joyful demeanor. "No need."
"If you insist on bothering me because of this child, I'd rather not have it."
Ethan's smile froze.
It suddenly occurred to him—the gala had been three months ago.
Even if she were pregnant, it would only be about two months along now.
"Don't be rash." He softened his tone. "Name any condition you want."
Sophia smirked. "Really?"
"Of course." Hope reignited in Ethan's eyes.
"Then disappear from my life forever."
